In Focus: Supporting women and girls affected by the war on Gaza

Women and girls in Gaza face catastrophic levels of hunger, insecurity and rights violations. Famine has been declared in Gaza City.

UN Women continues supporting women-led organizations inside Gaza, providing lifesaving services and centering women’s leadership to guide response and recovery.

The situation

Since October 2023, nearly two years of relentless hostilities have devastated the Gaza Strip. Women and girls of have paid the highest price of the conflict – in just one year, Gaza accounted for 7 in 10 women killed in conflict globally.

Nearly a quarter of a million women and girls in Gaza are starving, many of them dying, in one of the worst hunger crises in modern history. Over half a million more are facing extreme hunger and acute malnutrition.

Mothers cannot feed their newborns; girls go to sleep hungry; families are burying children who are starving to death. Doctors are forced to ration the last vials of medicine, and aid workers themselves are going without food.

UN Women joins the United Nations and humanitarian partners in calling for:

  • Unrestricted, sustained humanitarian access at scale to reach women and girls with essential aid and services.
  • The immediate release of all hostages.
  • An immediate ceasefire leading to a just and sustainable peace.
